There's a nice piece on the Criterion website about the actors Preston Sturges liked to work with:

That is indeed a nice link. Capra is the other director I can think of who had a "stable". I'm not informed enough about Welles, but basically he used Mercury Theater people, right? What other directors drew from a "stable" of actors?

Okay, I'll make it official. I love this new tribe. David, you hit a tape measure home run.

Enough props to David. Now for the Preston props. If there was a hall of fame for character actors, a majority would be from Strurges' stable.

Just the faces, alone, is enough to get a movie bank'd. You needed a star, perhaps. But just this lineup of Sturges players would have most studios writing a check.

-the one director that came to my mind was Kurosawa. In so many of his films you see familiar faces from his other work. So many of the supporting characters in his films were just as memorable & affecting as the leads.

Just got the Frank Capra box and am enjoying "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" again. I love Capra for so many reasons but a major reason his films are so strong is because he cared just as much about who he cast for a one line part as who he cast for the leads. What a incredibly strong bullpen for this film! Can anyone think of any modern directors who build as strong a cast as Capra, Sturges and others?
